The first match of the T20 series between West Indies and Team India (WI vs IND) was held at the Brian Lara Stadium in Trinidad. Host team captain Rovman Powell won the toss and batting first, the Windies team set a target of 150 runs in front of Team India but due to poor batting, the Indian team lost the match by 4 runs.
Batting first, the hosts got off to a steady start. Yuzvendra Chahal first dismissed Kyle Mayers (1 run) and then Brendan King (28 runs). After that Johnson Charles was also dismissed after scoring only 3 runs. Nicholas Pooran came in the middle order and played an excellent inning of 41 runs. Captain Rovman Powell played a tremendous inning for his team and returned to the pavilion after scoring 48 runs. Powell scored 48 runs off 32 balls, hitting 3 fours and 3 sixes. For India, Yuzvendra Chahal and Arshdeep Singh took 2-2 wickets.
Chasing the target of 150 runs, Team India got the first blow in the form of Shubman Gill for 5 runs. Shubman Gill returned to the pavilion after scoring 3 runs and Ishan Kishan was also dismissed after scoring only 6 runs. But after this Suryakumar Yadav played an important inning of 21 runs. Tilak Verma, playing his debut match, made a rapid start to his international career. He opened his account by hitting two consecutive sixes against Alzarri Joseph. Tilak Verma played a stormy inning of 39 runs off 22 balls which included 2 fours and 3 sixes.
After the fall of Tilak Verma, none of the Indian batsmen failed to play a big innings. Hardik Pandya returned to the pavilion after scoring 19 runs, Sanju Samson 12 runs and Akshar Patel 13 runs and the Indian team fell short of the target by 4 runs. The hosts have taken a 1-0 lead in the 5-match T20I series. The second T20 match will be played between the two teams on August 6.
