The Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore witnessed an intense clash between Afghanistan and Sri Lanka (SL vs AFG) today. Batting first in the sixth match of the Asia Cup 2023, Sri Lanka posted a mammoth score of 291 runs in 50 overs. Afghanistan had to chase down a target of 292 runs in 37.1 overs to qualify for the Super 4, which Afghanistan failed to achieve. Afghanistan team was all out for 289 runs.

Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bat first, the team’s openers got off to a solid start. Dimuth Karunaratne scored 32 runs while Pathum Nishanka played a crucial inning of 41 runs. Kusal Mendis, who came to bat at number 3, scored 92 runs in 84 balls, which included 6 fours and 3 sixes. Charith Aslanka contributed 36 runs and Dhananjaya de Silva contributed 14 runs in the middle order for Sri Lanka and Dunith Wellage and Mahish Tikshna shared a tremendous 64-run partnership in the last over. Due to which Sri Lanka was able to score close to 300. For Afghanistan, Gulbadin Naib took 4 wickets and Rashid Khan took 2 wickets.

Afghanistan got off to a brisk start losing quick wickets to reach the target in 37.1 overs. 3 batsmen returned to the pavilion on a score of 50 runs but after this there was a tremendous partnership of 71 runs between Rahmat Shah and captain Hashmatullah Shahidi. Rahmat Shah returned to the pavilion after scoring 45 runs. Mohammad Nabi, who came to bat in the middle order, batted furiously and shared a blistering 80-run partnership with the captain, in which Nabi played a stormy innings of 68 runs. Mohammad Nabi faced 32 balls in his innings, which included 6 fours and 5 sixes. Captain Shahidi also played an innings of 59 runs.

In the last over of this match in Asia Cup 2023, Karim Janat scored 22, Najibullah scored 23 and Rashid Khan scored a quick 27 off 16 balls but could not win his team. Sri Lanka bowled out Afghanistan for 289 to give their side a narrow 2-run victory and qualify for the Super 4s.
