Faf du Plessis out of CPL 2023, veteran all-rounder gets captaincy of major team

In the Caribbean Premier League (CPL T20), St. Lucia Kings captain Faf du Plessis has been ruled out of the remaining matches of CPL (CPL 2023) due to a long-standing tennis-elbow injury. Faf will now undergo surgery for this injury. After Faf’s ouster, the captaincy of St Lucia Kings has been given to Zimbabwean all-rounder Sikandar Raza, who made his debut for the team earlier this month.

Faf told about his elbow problem

Apart from this, St. Lucia Kings have included foreign player Colin Munro, the highest run-scorer in CPL history, in their team to meet the shortage of Faf. After defeating Kieron Pollard’s Trinbago Knight Riders by 54 runs on Saturday, August 26, Faf had said that he would undergo surgery after reaching South Africa. At the same time, through his team’s Instagram channel, Faf had informed that now he will not play cricket for the next three months.

“Happy with the result (of the match), but obviously sad that I have to go back to a crucial phase of the tournament,” Faf told Ian Bishop after his last match in CPL 2023. You feel that the team can start doing some good things in the tournament. For me, playing with this elbow has been very challenging. I have played (cricket) with it (tennis elbow) for almost two years. Had eight cortisone injections in the elbow.”
Faf further said that,

“Now I am at that stage, that cortisone is not good for my body anymore. So, operation is always the last resort. I didn’t want to do it, but now I am discharged. Will have to go to the hospital for surgery.”
Apart from this, Faf also told that he was having trouble playing the shot due to elbow pain. He was not able to use his power, nor was he able to time the ball properly. For this reason, he has now decided to undergo surgery immediately.
