Tamim Iqbal, the veteran player of the Bangladesh cricket team, has been ruled out of the Asia Cup (Asia Cup 2023) due to a back injury, and now he has given up the ODI captaincy of Bangladesh, surprising everyone. The Bangladesh Cricket Board is hopeful that Tamim Iqbal will recover in time for the home ODI series against New Zealand (BAN vs NZ), starting on 21 September.
Let us tell you that Tamim Iqbal had decided to retire from international cricket, but after the intervention of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, he reversed his decision. Within a month of that, new news has come to the fore that Tamim Iqbal has been ruled out of the Asia Cup due to injury and has also relinquished the ODI captaincy.
Tamim Iqbal will be ready for the World Cup!
The former Bangladesh captain on Monday returned from England after undergoing treatment for a disc problem in his back. He has undergone several injections as an immediate measure to repair the damaged disc between L4 and L5.
At the moment, Tamim is on complete rest, and will not be able to start his rehabilitation process until at least next week. However, even after undergoing treatment, the Bangladesh Cricket Board might have given Tamim enough time to rest for the 2023 ODI World Cup in India.
The 34-year-old Tamim has played 70 Tests, 241 ODIs and 78 T20 matches in his international career. In these formats, he has scored 5,134 runs at an average of 38.89, 8,313 runs at an average of 36.62 and 1,758 runs at an average of 24.08 respectively. Now it has to be seen how long he is able to return, while the question for the Bangladesh Cricket Board will now be that who should hand over the captaincy of the ODI format.
Liton Das has led the team in Tamim’s absence several times during his captaincy. In such a situation, it is expected that only Liton Das can be seen captaining Bangladesh in the Asia Cup starting after a few weeks.
