CWC 2023: Afghanistan scores hat-trick of wins by beating Netherlands

In the 34th match of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 (CWC 2023), Netherlands was defeated by Afghanistan by 7 wickets with 111 balls remaining. Playing first, Netherlands team was all out after scoring 179 in 46.3 overs, in reply Afghanistan team won the match by scoring 181/3 in 31.3 overs. Afghanistan’s Mohammad Nabi (3/28) was named player of the match.

Netherlands won the toss and decided to bat first, which proved wrong on the fifth ball of the innings and Wesley Baresi (1) became the victim of Mujeeb Ur Rahman on the score of 3. Max O’Dowd (42 off 40 balls), who was struggling with poor form, made a half-century partnership with Colin Ackerman for the second wicket and took the score beyond 70 but was run out in the 12th over on the score of 73.

At the score of 92 in the 19th over, Ackerman also returned to the pavilion after scoring 29 runs in 35 balls. His wicket also came in the form of run out. Captain Scott Edwards could not open the account and was run out on the score of 92. In the 21st over, Bas de Lead (3) also departed and the team suffered its fifth blow at the score of 97. Netherlands completed 100 runs in the 22nd over.

The sequence of wickets continued and in the 26th over, at the score of 113, Saqib Zulfikar (3) was shown the way to the pavilion by Noor Ahmed. On the score of 134, Logan Van Beek was also out in the 31st over on a personal score of 2. Seabrand Englebrecht was holding one end amidst the continuous fall of wickets and he played an inning of 58 runs in 86 balls before being out at the score of 152 in the 35th over. It was with the help of his innings that Netherlands was successful in crossing the 150 mark.

For the ninth wicket, Roelof van der Merwe (11) added 17 runs with Aryan Dutt (10*) and was out on the score of 169. Netherlands’ innings ended in the 47th over and at the score of 179, Paul van Meekeren (4) became the victim of Mohammad Nabi as the last wicket. Mohammad Nabi took maximum three wickets for Afghanistan. Noor Ahmed got two wickets and Mujeeb ur Rahman got one wicket.

Chasing the target, Afghanistan got a start of 27 runs and in the sixth over, Rahmanullah Gurbaz (10) became the victim of Logan Van Beek. From here, Rahmat Shah along with Ibrahim Zadran (20) took the score beyond 50 in the 10th over. Zadran was out on the score of 55 in the 11th over.

From here Rahmat Shah and captain Hashmatullah Shahidi made the third consecutive half-century partnership for the third wicket in the ongoing World Cup and added 74 runs in 77 balls. During this, Afghanistan completed 100 runs in the 19th over. Rahmat Shah completed his third consecutive half-century of the tournament in 47 balls before being dismissed on the score of 129 in the 23rd over and became the victim of Saqib Zulfikar after scoring 52 runs in 54 balls.

After his dismissal, Hashmatullah took over the responsibility and brought up his second half-century of the tournament in 59 balls. He played an unbeaten inning of 56 runs in 64 balls and made an unbeaten partnership of 52 runs with Azmatullah Omarzai (28 balls 31*) for the fourth wicket, giving his team victory in the 32nd over. For Netherlands, Logan van Beek, Roelof van der Merwe and Saqib Zulfikar took one wicket each.

Afghanistan’s next match in the World Cup 2023 is against Australia on November 7 in Mumbai. Netherlands’ next match is against England on November 8 in Pune.
