CWC 2023: South Africa beats New Zealand for the first time in 24 years

South Africa’s last win against New Zealand in the ODI World Cup came in the 1999 World Cup. In that match, the African team had won by a margin of 74 runs. However, after this New Zealand managed to defeat South Africa every time. Five matches were played between these two teams after the 1999 World Cup and before the 2023 World Cup and the New Zealand team had won all of them.

However, this streak was broken in 2023 and South Africa defeated New Zealand badly. In the match played in Pune on Wednesday, South Africa, batting first against New Zealand, made a huge score of 357/4 in 50 overs with the help of century innings from Quinton de Kock and Rassie van der Dussen. In response to the target, the New Zealand team could not put up any fight at all and collapsed after scoring 167 runs in 35.3 overs.

After defeating New Zealand, South Africa reached 12 points with six wins from seven matches and due to better net run rate, the team ousted India from first place and almost secured their place in the semi-finals.
