On the third day of the first Test being played in Sylhet, Bangladesh performed well against New Zealand (BAN vs NZ) and strengthened its position. At stumps on the third day, Bangladesh scored 212/3 in 68 overs and took a lead of 205 runs. Earlier today, New Zealand’s first innings was reduced to a score of 317 and it had got a lead of 7 runs.

New Zealand started play ahead of yesterday’s score of 266/8. The pair of Kyle Jameson and Tim Southee took the team’s score beyond 300 in the 95th over. Both added 52 runs for the ninth wicket and took the score to 316. Mominul Haq broke this partnership by dismissing Kyle Jameson (23). Tim Southee was out as the last wicket on the score of 317. He played an inning of 35 runs in 62 balls and also completed 2000 runs of his Test career. For Bangladesh, Taijul Islam took four wickets and Mominul Haq took three wickets.

Bangladesh got 10 overs to play before lunch, in which the opening pair of Mahmudul Hasan Joy and Zakir Hasan scored 19/0 without any loss. After lunch, Zakir Hasan (17) was made his victim by Ejaz Patel in the 13th over at the score of 23. Whereas in the 14th over, on the score of 26, Mahmudul Hasan Joy was run out on the personal score of 8. From here the pair of captain Nazmul Hossain Shanto and Mominul Haq did not allow any wicket to fall till tea. By tea time, Bangladesh had scored 111/2 in 38 overs.

Mominul Haq (40) was run out at the beginning of the last session and Bangladesh suffered its third blow at the score of 116 in the 41st over. From here, Nazmul Hossain Shanto along with Mushfiqur Rahim (40*) made an unbeaten partnership of 96 runs and took Bangladesh’s score beyond 200 in the 66th over. During this, Shanto scored the fifth Test century of his career in 192 balls and remained unbeaten after scoring 104 runs. The only success from New Zealand’s side was Ajaz Patel in this BAN vs NZ match.
