South Africa made veteran player captain in all three formats

South Africa’s experienced player Laura Wolvaardt has been officially made the captain of the team in all three formats. Cricket South Africa also announced the squad for the T20I series against Bangladesh starting next month. 15 players have been selected in the squad and this will be Wolvaert’s first challenge as captain of all three formats.

24-year-old Wolvaardt has played in all three formats for South Africa. He has represented his country in one Test, 86 ODIs and 59 T20Is. He has 32 runs in Test, 3421 in ODI and 1313 runs in T20I.

Laura Wolvaardt was appointed acting captain after Sune Loos stepped down from the captaincy. During this time he represented the South African team against Pakistan and New Zealand. South Africa had won 2-1 in the home ODI series against both the teams.

The T20I series against Bangladesh will not be easy for Laura Wolvaardt, as some important players with central contracts will be missing from the team’s squad. Fast bowler Ayabonga Khaka will not be able to play due to a knee injury. All-rounder Chloe Tryon has become a victim of groin injury, while Nadine de Klerk has a side strain problem. Apart from this, experienced all-rounder Marizanne Cap has been rested and she will return in the ODI series.

In the absence of senior players, South Africa Under-19 and South Africa’s emerging players Ayanda Hlubi and Elise-Marie Marx have got a place in the international team for the first time in the shorter format.

The 3-match T20I series against South Africa and Bangladesh will begin in Benoni from December 3. After this, the last two matches will be played in Kimberley on 6th and 8th December respectively. Whereas, the ODI series will be played between 16th to 20th December.
