CWC 2023: AUS vs SL Match Report

In the 14th match of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 (CWC 2023), Australia defeated Sri Lanka by 5 wickets in Lucknow and registered its first win in three matches. Sri Lankan team, playing first, was all out after scoring only 209 runs in 43.3 overs, in which after the century partnership, their last 10 wickets fell within just 84 runs. In reply, Australia won by losing 5 wickets in just 35.2 overs. For Australia, Adam Zampa bowled brilliantly and took 4 wickets.

Sri Lanka won the toss and decided to bat first and had a great start. For the first wicket, Kusal Perera and Pathum Nissanka made a tremendous partnership of 125 runs and both took the team beyond 100 in the 18th over itself. However, after the dismissal of Nissanka in the 22nd over, the direction of the Sri Lankan innings changed.

The mark of 150 was crossed in the 25th over, but Kusal Perera was out on the score of 157 in the 27th over. Kusal Mendis (9) also returned to the pavilion at the score of 165 in the 28th over and Sadira Samarawickrama (8) also returned to the pavilion at the score of 166 in the 30th over. When the score was 178/4 in 32.1 overs, rain came and the match was stopped for some time.

However, when the match started in this CWC 2023, Dhananjay de Silva (7) was also out after two balls on the score of 178. Dunith Vellalage (2) was run out at the score of 184 in the 35th over, followed by Chamika Karunaratne (2) at the score of 196 in the 38th over and Mahish Teekshana (0) was out at the score of 199 in the 40th over. Sri Lanka completed 200 runs in the 41st over but in the same over, Lahiru Kumara (4) was out at the score of 204. In the 44th over, on the score of 209, Charith Asalanka was also out after scoring 25 runs in 39 balls and the Sri Lankan team was all out in 39 balls.

Apart from Adam Zampa, Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc took 2 wickets each and Glenn Maxwell took one wicket for Australia.

In response to the target, Australia suffered two big setbacks in the fourth over and Dilshan Madhushanka bowled a double wicket maiden over and sent David Warner (11) and Steve Smith (0) to the pavilion on the score of 24. From here Mitchell Marsh added 57 runs for the third wicket with Marnus Labuschagne and took over the team.

Mitchell Marsh played a brilliant half-century of 52 runs in 51 balls, but his dismissal at the score of 81 in the 15th over gave Australia its third blow. After this, Josh Inglis added 77 runs for the fourth wicket with Marnus Labuschagne and took the team beyond 150 in the 27th over. Marnus Labuschagne was out for 40 at 158 in the 29th over, but Josh Inglis completed his half-century and scored 58 runs in 59 balls before being out at 192 in the 34th over.

Glenn Maxwell (21 balls 31*) along with Marcus Stoinis (10 balls 20*) gave the team a one-sided victory in the 36th over with 88 balls remaining. For Sri Lanka, Dilshan Madhushanka took the maximum of three wickets and apart from him, only Dunith Vellalage took one wicket.

Australia’s next match in the CWC 2023 will be against Pakistan on October 20 in Bangalore, while Sri Lanka’s next match will be against Netherlands on October 21 in Lucknow.
